History of Austin Brass Center
Nathaniel Mayfield founded the Austin Brass Center with the hope of providing local brass students with same musical opportunities he received in high school (I.E. Tanglewood’s Empire Brass Seminar and Interlochen Arts Academy’s Brass Ensemble). These experiences were very formative in his musical development, and Nathaniel felt it was a realist goal to draw from the amazing brass talent that was out there in the Central Texas high schools to form high level brass chamber music ensembles.
After receiving 501 c3 non-profit status, Nathaniel collaborated with Mike Misner and Adrian Griffin to help organize and administrate the newly established Austin Brass Center. Adrian in particular played a pivotal role in the creation the Austin Brass Center’s 2007 Summer Brass Institute, coordinating with local band directors and securing facilities. Indeed, the Institute would not have happened without him. The Austin Brass Quintet, ABC’s resident faculty quintet, was the brain-child of Dr. Mike Misner, who wanted to form a brass quintet to promote music education in central Texas schools. Mike is also the webmaster/graphic designer for ABC.
The Austin Brass Center is a place where brass students come to understand a higher level about their own instruments and performance literature. Classes range from private lessons, large brass ensembles, quintets, quartets, trios, duets, music theory, master-classes, and a college prep-department. Enrollment is open to all students. Scholarships are available upon request and approval.
