Billy Gayman, Austinbones
Billy Gayman is a graduate of the DMA program at the University of Texas, as well as a freelance performer and private instructor in the central Texas area. He and his wife Kelly reside in Austin.
As a Tenor and Bass trombonist, Billy has performed across the United States at venues such as the International Trombone Festival, Eastern Trombone Workshop, New York Brass Conference, Texas Music Educators Association conference, College Band Directors National Association Convention as well as the Texas Trombone Symposium. He has also had opportunities to share the stage with trombone greats such as Joseph Alessi, Ronald Barron, Bill Reichenbach, Michael Davis, Conrad Herwig, Phil Wilson, John Fedchock and Carl Fontana to name a few.
Prior to moving to Austin, Billy graduated from Azle High school, and then attended the University of Texas at Arlington. While at UTA, Billy served as a member of the Trombone Choir, winners of the 1995 International Trombone Association’s Emory Remington Award. He also served as a member with the Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Combos, New Music Ensemble, and Wind Ensemble. In 1998, he graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Music Theory and Composition. During his time in the DFW area, he also spent time as a freelance performer, as well as a private instructor.
After graduating from UTA, Billy moved to Austin to enroll in the graduate music program at UT, earning his Masters degree in performance in 2000. Since arriving at UT in 1998, He has served as a member of the UT Symphony orchestra, Wind ensemble, Jazz Orchestra, Trombone choir, and the award winning UT Jazz Bones, winners of the 2001 International Trombone Association’s Kai Winding Award. Since the fall of 2000, Billy has served as the graduate assistant for the trombone studio at UT.
Billy’s trombone playing has greatly benefited from the vast musical knowledge of Nathaniel Brickens, Donald Knaub, Andrew Russell, and Gary Barkey
